Setting Boundaries Early in a Relationship
A common misconception about boundaries are that they are something you should bring up when things go really bad or when you feel uncomfortable. In reality, the earlier you set them, the less likely things go wrong in the first place. Waiting too long to talk about what you need can you make you feel like you have to mask more than you already do, tired, or make you not want to be around people. You’re reading this because you want to take that step and meet someone, but you need a little help which is where we come in 🙂
Start with thinking about yourself. What makes you feel most fulfilled and have the most energy. When you figure that part out, then ask what do you need to do to protect that.
It can be something simple like “I need alone time after work before I can socialize” or “I can't do last-minute plans, my brain needs a heads up” or “don’t change the group that I’m going to be around without talking to me first about it.
Talking about your needs isn’t being dramatic, it’s telling people what you need to be happy. If they want to be around you, they’ll listen.
A lot of us were taught that talking about our needs makes us high maintenance. Here at Uneepi we think about like this: a boundary stated clearly and calmly is a gift to the relationship, not a burden on it. It's much easier for a partner to respect “I need quiet time on Sundays” than to guess why you seem distant every week.
One thing you can do: pair the boundary with the why, briefly. “I need to leave loud parties after an hour or two sometimes I can get overwhelmed and I stop being able to enjoy myself” gives context without over-explaining. You're not asking permission, you're sharing information.
Expect some boundaries to need repeating. That's normal, not a sign you failed to communicate. New relationships with people take practice and repetition is just reinforcement for what you need to be happy
Finally, watch how someone responds to your very first boundary. Do they get curious, are they accepting or do they get defensive and start trying to challenge and push you on your boundaries.
A person that is not willing to respect your limits is not someone you want to be around.
This is the first step in a really big journey, and we’ll be with you every step of the way
